The rebuke implied in paragraph 2

of Mr. Smith's letter is really quite

undeserved, and it is surely an exaggeration to describe Mr. Purves' appointment to

succeed Mr. Henderson next September as

"the final stage of a complicated series

culminating nearly a year hence."

It is clear, however, that in the

circumstances the announcement of the

appointment so far ahead must have caused

some embarrassment; and I think it might be

a wise precaution to lay down for the future

that no appointment should be announced more

than three months ahead without reference

to the Principal in the Geographical Department

concerned.

I am not sure that any reply to

Mr. Smith's letter is now necessary, but

submit a draft for consideration.
